A desire to experiment with new colors and a new surface led to this little portrait. I loved the way the staining properties of the new colors puddled on the illustration board, a surface I had not worked on before. I used a 2H graphite pencil to draw the image directly onto the board and built up the layers in thin glazes. I reserved as much of the light values as possible, & then went in and added the small details last with gouache.
