"Coming Out" pencils & new media by Lorraine Kelly

My father has lived most of his life in the goldfields of Western Australia and currently lives in Coolgardie. For his 70th birthday I wanted to do a painting for him of the Australian outback as he is strongly connected to the land, being a prospector/driller for most of his adult life. I decided to do a gumnut “coming out” because even though it is his 70th birthday, he still tries new things and has dreams of creating woodwork in his shed when he finally retires. I suppose to me, somehow this gumnut coming out represents how dramatic creativity and ideas in everyday life can be if we take the time to reflect on it. I’m hoping that his creativity in the shed and his retirement will be as beautiful as the emerging gum-flower.
