Figurative Drawing – Bringing to life the inner spirit of the figure.
Kristina Laurendi Havens is a Fine Artist whose Art focuses on the Human Figure. Growing up, Kristina was involved in both the Visual Arts and Dance, and her work reflects her love of beauty, balance, and strength. Her dance experience was a major inspiration in her Thesis work when she earned her MFA at Texas Christian University.
Kristina explores the figure through a variety of media, including Nupastel, Pastel, Charcoal, Watercolor, and Acrylic. In each media, her goal is to create a sense of history through layering, use a wide variety of mark making, and bring to life the inner spirit of the figure.
Her current series is a balance between a flawed surface and a perfect drawing of the figure. She starts with a specially prepared surface that she builds up with a mix of gesso and modeling paste, creating a texture similar to Venetian plaster, then uses charcoal to draw in a figure, fitting perfectly into the shape.
Kristina has no fear of making mistakes. Embracing every mark, good or bad, is important in her work. Every mark, whether it works with or against the previous mark, is vital to the final piece.
At home, Kristina works in her studio where her children are often right beside her, painting and drawing. She also organizes a weekly drawing group for local artists to draw from the live model, a practice that she encourages every artist to participate in.
She has been selling her work in galleries and on-line for several years. Her work is in private and corporate collections around the world.
